Trying to enjoy winter sports and effectively communicate on the mountain has always been a tough issue to solve. Over time, lots of screaming evolved into the use of walkie-talkies. Now, leaps in technology have enabled the creation of a product like the Explore1.
The stylish, radio-equipped Explore1 allows for an unlimited number of snowboarders and skiers to stay in direct contact with each other up to a range of three kilometers.
Its Bluetooth controls are designed for even the biggest gloves, letting users answer phone calls, control audio on their phones and change how much outside sound is heard. Users also have access to a companion iOS/Android app to toggle the group’s radio frequency, check battery levels and receive OTA updates. Regardless of how the user opts to customize the Explore 1 with a variety of variously colored customizable panels, none of this functionality changes, ensuring that the style stays intact.
Of course, none of this matters if the actual helmet isn’t safe. In that regard, the Explore1 was designed to comply with safety standards set by ASTM, CPSC & EN 1077, making it certified for use in other sports like mountain biking. It also integrates MIPS technology for better impact protection. An Explore1 helmet goes for $328 and is expected to ship in December 2016. Its campaign is looking for about $143,000 by May 5th, 2016.
The previously covered Shredz audio helmet is a kernel of an idea compared to the Explore1. More functional in every way, the Explore1 is a natural evolution and a step in the right direction for all sports that require some kind of helmet and could benefit from the range of features it has. Now the waiting game begins until a HUD version is up for grabs.
