YME-D1 puts you in the action for panoramic imaging

As virtual reality (VR) continues to be one of the most talked about technologies, the number of cameras on the market that can capture VR-capable, 360-degree video is growing as well.

YME-D1 is a connected panoramic imaging action camera that features an 8-megapixel CMOS sensor and a Sunplus 6350 chipset that can capture VR-capable 360-degree video at 1440p (30 frames per second) and 1080p (also 30 fps). Standard recording options include loop recording and time lapse.

A Driving Mode allows three-minute clips to be recorded. Storage of stills and video is offered via a separate microSD card. The camera is waterproof down to 30 meters. It also works in conjunction with an Android and iOS app for mobile devices. The ship date and future pricing aren’t provided. But Indiegogo backers can get one for a pledge starting at $119. Its maker hopes to raise $50,000 by June 12.

There is growing demand for cameras that capture 360-degree images. It may be hard for a little-known camera maker to have much of an impact in the action camera category when market share leader GoPro plans its own VR model, albeit at much higher pricing. At least initially, YM-D1’s main rivals would likely be action cameras including the 360fly that are in a more similar price range.
