Shooting stereoscopic 3D video with an existing 2D camera would be a nice feature to have. But most cameras aren’t designed to do that and achieving a stereoscopic 3D effect typically requires two separate cameras, plus additional software to stitch the two videos together.
Vitrima is a stereoscopic 3D lens that connects to a GoPro camera via the camera’s standard housing that comes pre-attached to the lens. The lens transforms the camera into a 3D recording device without the need for another camera or special software. It uses mirrors to create the 3D natively in the camera. Another nice feature is that Vitrima is waterproof.
Vitrima ships in August at future pricing of $129. But Indiegogo backers can order one with an $89 pledge. Its maker is also fielding a lightweight version of the lens, ideal for drones and gimbals, that connects directly to a GoPro camera and ships in September at $99. But Indiegogo backers can order one with a $75 pledge. Its makers hope to raise $20,000 by July 22.
As long as Vitrima provides a good-quality 3D effect, it seems to be another handy accessory for the popular GoPro. The one main drawback is compatibility because, for now anyway, it works only with the GoPro Hero 4 and Hero 3. Watching the videos recorded in 3D also requires a separate 3D headset or uploading videos to YouTube to use select types of 3D glasses. Vitrima’s makers are selling a 3D headset at $29.
